The modern history of Atlanta traces back to 1837 when the city was founded at the intersection of two major railroad lines. The city spans across much of Fulton County and part of DeKalb County, and it is home to about 447,841 people. The Atlanta metropolitan area is among the largest in the nation with a population of more than 5 million.

Throughout the Civil Rights Movement, Atlanta gained a reputation as a progressive city that was “too busy to hate.” Through this period in time, Atlanta gathered international notoriety. The city went through further changes spurred by the 1996 Olympics, and it is widely recognized as a transportation hub, having the world’s busiest airport since 1998.
